Colloquium on Optical Network Testbeds

Este texto em português.

Nature of the Meeting and Evaluation of its Importance for the Current Situation of Science and Technology in Brazil

Every other year for the last 20 years, the SBMO (Brazilian Society for Microwave and Optoelectronics), together with IEEE-MTT-S (IEEE Microwave Therory and Techniques Society), has organized an international conference in Brazil – the biggest event in Latin America related to the areas of microwave, antennas and optical communications. Known as IMOC, International Microwave and Optoelectronics Conference, in 2007 this conference will be held in Salvador, Bahia, from 29/oct to 01/nov, at the Pestana Hotel.

The Brazilian scientific community which participates in IMOC also participates actively in two Brazilian projects related to network testbeds: Project GIGA, national in scope, funded by the Ministries of Communications and of Science & Technology, through FUNTTEL, Fund for the Technological Development of Telecommunications, and FINEP, Funding Agency for Studies and Projects; and Project KyaTera, regional in scope (limited to the State of São Paulo), funded by FAPESP, within the TIDIA Program – Program for Information Technology in the Development of the Advanced Internet. By a fortunate coincidence of timing, IMOC 2007 will take place at a special moment close to the conclusion of important phases of these two projects. Pioneers in Brazil, their basic infrastrutures have been and continue to be built and expanded. It is natural, therefore, to seek to promote an encounter between their main actors, so that they may reflect on the results already obtained and those still expected, difficulties encountered with the models and strategies adopted, and the next phases of the two projects.

With this motivation, we propose to organize an event, concurrent and co-located with IMOC 2007, in the form of a colloquium, which by definition is an encounter for conversation and debate. The central theme will therefore be the Brazilian experience with optical network testbeds, and the proposed name for the event is “CONT” (Colloquium on Optical Network Testbeds), which also suggests continuity (the next steps).

The duration of the colloquium will be one day, and the date chosen, by agreement with the event chairman, Prof. Evandro Conforti, is Nov 1st, synchronizing its timing with that of IMOC (technical sessions, coffee and lunch breaks). The choice of this date is explained as follows: the location of the event (Salvador, tourist and business center) and the proximity to a public holiday (Nov 2nd) may stimulate and attract public participation, allied to testbed activities outside the scope of IMOC, such as application and service layers, content production, telecommunication equipment suppliers and telecommunications providers. The final session of the two meetings, CONT e IMOC, will consist of a joint concelebration, together with demonstration of the results already obtained from the two testbeds, thus promoting integration between the participants of the two meetings; a technical session of optical communications on Nov 1st is scheduled before the morning coffee break, i.e. before the beginning of the colloquium, which will allow more participants of IMOC also to participate in all the CONT sessions.

In addition to physical participation, an alternative will be to watch real-time video transmission of the entire colloquium to institutions participating in the testbeds, by means of connectivity provided to the conference site. By means of such connectivity, it will also be possible to carry out demonstrations of the results obtained in the GIGA and KyaTera projects.
